After another rigorous “Tort”ure camp, the Philadelphia Flyers have finalized their opening night roster. A roster that includes 12-players age 26 or younger.
On day 1 of Flyers training camp, 57-players were fighting for 23-roster spots on the opening night roster. Today, those final 23-players are known.
The 2023-2024 Philadelphia Flyers consists of 13-forwards, 7-defensemen, and 3-goalies. Including ten new players that were not on the opening night roster last season.
Of those ten players, four will be making their Flyers debuts. Garnet Hathaway, Ryan Poehling, Marc Staal, and Sean Walker will officially put the Flyers jersey on for the first time on Thursday.
Cam Atkinson and Sean Couturier will also be making their long awaited returns to the lineup. Both Atkinson and Couturier missed the entire 2022-2023 season.
At forward, the Flyers return seven players that were on the opening night roster last season. Those seven players are Noah Cates, Nic Deslauriers, Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost, Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton, and Owen Tippett.
The other six forwards are Cam Atkinson, Bobby Brink, Sean Couturier, Tyson Foerster, Garnet Hathaway, and Ryan Poehling.
On defense, the Flyers return three players that were on the opening night roster last season. Those three players are Travis Sanheim, Nick Seeler, and Egor Zamula.
The other four defenseman are Emil Andrae, Marc Staal, Sean Walker, and Cam York.
Rasmus Ristolainen will start the season on IR.
In goal, the Flyers will be once again led by Carter Hart. This will be Hart’s fifth straight opening night start for the Flyers.
Backing up Hart will be Samuel Ersson.
With Felix Sandstrom will start the year with the Flyers. Head coach John Tortorella has already said Ersson is the backup. But, the Flyers feel a risk of losing Sandstrom if they waive him at the moment.
The oldest player on the roster is Marc Staal, age 36, and the youngest player on the roster is Tyson Foerster, age 21.
The average of the Flyers is 26.6.
