On Wednesday, Philadelphia Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher met with the media before the Flyers season starts on Thursday. Providing some updates on injuries and the roster.
Egor Zamula Opening Night 3rd LHD?
On Monday, Egor Zamula was one of three Flyers that were sent to the Phantoms to free up cap space to become cap complaint. Now, on the day before the season opener, Zamula is back in the news.
With Cam York being sent down last week, the Flyers had an opening in the opening night lineup. York, who was penciled in as the Flyers opening night 3rd LHD, has an “ok” camp. Opening the door for his competition to push for the spot.
In doing so, many believed Nick Seeler had won the job. However, GM Chuck Fletcher mentioned another name that could be in the lineup tomorrow, Egor Zamula.
Fletcher mentioned that Zamula has a “good chance” to be in the starting lineup tomorrow.
During line rushes at practice today, Zamula was paired with Justin Braun. The pair is expected to be the opening night 3rd pair.
Sean Couturier No Timetable
Sean Couturier, who missed all of training camp with a back injury, has been back on the ice the past few days.
After missing the final 53-games last season due to back surgery, Couturier was healthy and ready for camp. But, during a training session before camp started, injured his back in an off-ice workout.
GM Chuck Fletcher said today that Couturier has been on the ice six or seven times now. Mentioned that if anything, the Flyers are trying to slow him down a bit.
Fletcher added that Couturier feels the best he has felt since pre-surgery.
Couturier is still week-to-week with no timetable to return at the moment.
Felix Sandstrom Groin Strain
After sitting out the final two preseason games, Felix Sandstrom was progressing in his recovery in the lead-up to the season.
But, on roster deadline day, Sandstrom ended up on SOIR.
Sandstrom, who left the Flyers 4th preseason game after just one period, suffered a groin strain in the game.
Even with practicing the last week, the Flyers are taking the more cautious approach with Sandstrom. Who is expected to be the backup to Carter Hart when healthy.
