Out with the old, in with a new. A concept that is old as time.

The first day of training camp the last three years for the Flyers was dreaded as the rope test. A yellow rope draped across the center of the ice to create a skating test.

The rope test was never a punishment by John Tortorella. It was a concept and drill to get his players to dig deep, find another gear that could be found later in the season.

But, under Rick Tocchet, no more yellow rope. Insert pucks and a sense of normality.

The Flyers first day of training camp this season was filled with the sites and sounds of a normal practice day.

Posts ringing… boards crunching… just an overall new excitement as the Flyers take the next step in their rebuild. A step that has been branded by GM Danny Briere “Brick By Brick”.

Day 1 Observations

1- The one prospect that entered camp with the most hope of making the opening night roster was Alex Bump. On Day 1, Rick Tocchet added some good fuel to that hope. Putting Bump on a line with Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny.

2- With injuries on the back end, multiple spots are open on the Flyers defense. One name that is getting an early look is Helge Grans, who was with Cam York today. Grans impressed last season in the AHL and was a standout in his 6 games with the Flyers last season.

3- Sean Couturier did not hold back when asked about his relationship with Rick Tocchet vs John Tortorella. Telling reporters “already had some really good conversations with him, probably more over the last three months than over two years with Torts. It’s fun to just go back & forth and get to know each other.”

4- After missing rookie camp for precautionary reasons, Jett Luchanko was a full participant in all drills today. Recovering from a offseason groin injury, the Flyers held Luchanko out of rookie camp to be give the best chance of making the team in camp.

1- Tyson Foerster was on the ice for Day 1 of training camp in a purple non-contact jersey. A cautious approach by Foerster and the Flyers to make sure after offseason elbow surgery. He is expected to be in that jersey for at least the first week of camp.

2- Oliver Bonk did not participate in any on ice activities on Thursday. GM Danny Briere updated Bonk’s status during the day as day-to-day with an upper body injury. An injury that was possibly was sustained on Day 1 of rookie camp.

3- Rasmus Ristolainen was on the ice early in the morning before the start of training camp. Recovering from offseason upper-body surgery, he is expected to miss the first two months of the season.
