The Philadelphia Flyers were shutout Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Losing to the LA Kings 5-0.
The Flyers have held their own against some of the top contenders in the Western Conference to start the season. Well… when they were healthy.
Carter Hart, the Flyers #1 goalie, is “day-to-day” with a mid-body injury after exiting Wednesday’s game against the Sabres. Sean Couturier, the Flyers #1 center, is also “day-to-day: with a lower-body injury.
Hart and Couturier are pivotal to the Flyers success this season. Both are the leaders in their respected positions for the Flyers.
For the second straight game, the Flyers were without Hart and Couturier.
With another game against a Western Conference contender, the LA Kings, the Flyers could not overcome the absence of Hart and Couturier. Being shutout by the Kings 5-0.
Power-Play Struggles Continues
The Flyers power-play unit finished dead last as a team last year. A unit that was missing most of their offensive players for most of the season.
To start the season, even with some of their offensive players back, the power-play continues to struggle. Once again failing to score on multiple opportunities.
Tonight, the Flyers had four opportunities to score on the power-play. All four failed to muster a goal, while only producing five shots.
Over their last five game, the Flyers power-play is just 1 for 18 (5.5%) – last in the NHL during that time frame.
Cam York Benched For 3rd Period
After the Flyers 5-0 loss to the Kings, John Tortorella was his usual calm self. Mentioning this is a very teachable moment for the team.
One player in particular that it will be for is Cam York who was benched for the 3rd period.
With 15.6 seconds left in the 2nd period, the Kings extended their lead to 4-0. A goal that came at the expense of a York turnover.
On a night where nothing went right for the Flyers, Tortorella wanted to make sure York understood one of his biggest teaching points. That point is understanding the momentum of games as Tortorella pointed out after the game.
