The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their fourth straight game in heartbreaking fashion. Loss in overtime, 4-3, to Utah Hockey Club with 0.6 left.

“When he watches on tape, you know, he wanted… he wants that to go in.”

Rodrigo Abols had the Flyers best chance of a goal in three past three games in Colorado. John Tortorella mentioned this morning he could feel how much he wanted it to go in when sitting next to him during their video session.

Tonight, 2:02 into the game, Abols was the one to end the Flyers long goal-less drought. Weird sometimes how the hockey gods work.

His first career goal in the NHL was the team’s first goal in last 182:15 and last 72 shots on net. Scott Laughton’s empty net goal against New Jersey last Monday was the last time the Flyers scored.

It wasn’t a greasy one as many Flyers said may be the way that breaks it. But, it was a goal that was a product of their style of play.

Abols caused a turnover at the point and eventually fired the puck past a screened Karel Vejmelka. A screen set by Nic Deslauriers, who returned to the lineup for the first time in 38 games.

The 2nd period continued to be a troubled one for the Flyers. Especially over the past seven games.

In the last seven games, they have been outscored 12-2 in the 2nd period. Including giving up another goal tonight.

Unlike the past six games though, the Flyers actually found the back of the net. Even though Utah outshot them 13-4 in the period.

Tyson Foerster scored his 14th goal of the season shortly after Utah scored.

Sean Couturier slid a cross ice pass right to the tape of Foerster’s stick in-front. Needing just a tap of the puck to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

Travis Konecny also found the back of the net in the 2nd period. But, the goal was called back after an offsides challenge by Utah.

Samuel Ersson made 39 saves in the 3-2 overtime lose. Dylan Guenther would score his second goal of the game with 0.6 left in overtime to give Utah the win.

While his record lately hasn’t been a reflection of his play, he once again made the timely saves needed to keep them in the game. None bigger than a 2v0 save as time expired in the 1st period.

Nic Deslauriers made his return to the lineup after missing the last 38 games due to injury.

Next up, the Washington Capitals Thursday night at 7:00 pm at the Wells Fargo Center.
