Flyers Do Everything Right, Before Shooting Themselves In The Foot

The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their 6th straight game for the third time this season. Losing 4-1 to the St. Louis Blues Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Tonight, the roles were reversed. The Flyers were the team playing on a back-to-back and no rest. Which, early on, did not seem like the case.

The Flyers held their own for the first half of the 1st period. Skating stride for stride & chance for chance with the well-rested Blues.

However, it would all change after the second TV timeout.

As the puck dropped with 9:17 left in the 1st period, it was like a switch was flipped. The Blues were a totally different team & scored the opening goal just 1:09 later.

Jordan Kyrou would ring one off the post & the rebound go right to Ivan Barbashev. Who would be robbed of a goal by the stick of Martin Jones. Before former Flyers Brayden Schenn rammed home the loose puck in the crease.

In the 2nd period, it was like a game of cat & mouse.

The Blues toyed with the Flyers for almost the full 20-minutes. Spending at least 75% of the time with the Flyers pinned in their own zone.

For the final 1:30, the Flyers finally had some pressure on the Blues. While on the power-play, the Flyers created some high-quality chances. But, none ever made it on net.

In the 3rd period, the Flyers were a different team. A team that didn’t have two 10+game losing streaks. A team that was doing everything they could to win a hockey game.

With 11:51 left in the game, that pressure paid off. Resulting in the game tying goal.

Oskar Lindblom’s shot from the point would find its way past three Blues players & two Flyers players. Beating Jordan Binnington high over the glove.

However, just like how the Flyers season has gone, it all went south from there.

On the ensuring shift, the Blues would re-take the lead on their first shot of the period. Scoring just 42-seconds after the Flyers tied the game.

The Blues would score two empty net goals. Eventually beating the Flyers 4-1.

Martin Jones stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced in the losing effort.

Third 6-game Losing Streak

When the Flyers lost 10-straight earlier in the season, no-one thought they would do it again. But, just three weeks later, another 10-game losing started.

That one lasted 13-games and many thought at that point that it wouldn’t happen again. But, just three weeks later, again, the Flyers are in the midst of another losing streak.

The Flyers lost their 6th straight game for the third time this season.

In the past 52-years, the Flyers have had three 6-game losing streaks in a season just once. Tonight, marked the second time.

Brayden Schenn Returns

With the St. Louis Blues in town, it marked the return of former Flyer Brayden Schenn. Who played in just his second game in Philadelphia since the trade to St. Louis in 2017.

While in Philadelphia, Schenn played 424-games in a Flyers uniform. Finishing with 109-goals & 137-assists in those 424-games.

In 5-previous games against the Flyers, Schenn had 2-goals & 2-assists.

Tonight, in his return, Schenn had a goal & 3-shots on net in 14:38 of ice-time.
