The Philadelphia Flyers returned from the 4Nations break in a big way. Doubling up Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center.

John Tortorella hoped the one thing that would help Matvei Michkov the best during the break was the rest.

In their first game back from the 4Nations break, don’t think Tortorella himself would have thought Michkov would have responded like this.

Michkov finished the day with three points, one goal and two assists.

His first point of the game was the opening goal for the Flyers. Scoring his 17th goal of the season just 2:07 into the game.

The next two were apart of the Flyers four goal 2nd period. Setting up Sean Couturier for a tap-in for his 200th career goal and then Owen Tippett for his second of the game shortly thereafter.

In his two games against Connor McDavid and the Oilers this season, Michkov has three goals and two assists.

The 2nd period has been a struggle for the Flyers this season. Entering today’s game with a NHL worst -22 differential. The Edmonton Oilers, on other hand, entered as the NHLs best team in the 2nd period with a +33 differential.

Today, however, those roles were reversed.

The Flyers scored four goals in the 2nd period. Starting with Owen Tippett’s first of two in the period.

Tippett’s 15th goal of the season was just a result of his speed and skill. Flying by an Oilers defender to create a mini breakaway, which he finished with a backhand under the bar.

Sean Couturier’s 200th career goal was the second of four. A tap-in created off a skilled move Matvei Michkov.

Tippett would add his second of the period before Andrei Kuzmenko’s power-play goal late in the period to cap off the four goal period.

Samuel Ersson continued his winning wins. Making the timely saves, while not as many as usual, as the Flyers played one of their best defensive games in some time.

Ersson finished with 15 saves in the 6-3 win.

Today was the first Flyers sellout – 19847 –  of the season. It is just their fourth sellout since covid pandemic.

Next up, the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Wells Fargo Center.
