NEW YORK CITY – What a difference 24-hours makes.
Last night, in Washington, a bad line change costed the Flyers at least one point. Tonight, their comeback got home and was completed by the guy who started it.
Matvei Michhov’s third two goal game of the season provided two of the three goals to comeback from a 2-0 hole.
His first goal of the night came on the power-play. Finding the hole in the Rangers coverage just before the power-play came to an end. Noah Cates slide the cross-ice pass to Michkov for the goal.
The second was the overtime winner shortly after exiting the penalty box.
After taking a late penalty in the third period for goaltender interference, Michkov waited patiently in the box as the Flyers killed off the penalty. Their biggest penalty killer was Sam Ersson who made two huge saves.
Shortly before the penalty expired, Ersson robbed Mika Zibanejad. Setting up the rebound that went to Sean Couturier made the pass to the exiting Michkov.
Michkov skated right around the tired JT Miller and beat Igor Shesterkin five hole for the game winner.
Samuel Ersson looked like a different version of his recent self tonight. His first save just 30-seconds into the game robbed Adam Fox of the opening goal.
Just before the midway point of the first period, a minor lapse in focus caused him the opening goal. A shot that never left the ice squeezed by Ersson.
It was the 39th time this season the Flyers have allowed the first goal.
Ersson did respond and finished the night strong. Finishing the game with 22 saves in the win.
Trevor Zegras scored his 21st goal of the season to tie the game 39 seconds in the 3rd period. It was the second straight night the Flyers scored in the opening minute of the third period.
The Flyers now had home where they will host the Boston Bruins on Saturday at 3:00pm.
