SALT LAKE CITY: It looked like the storyline was going to be a big night by the top line. Well, until the Flyers completely collapsed late in Utah.
After blowing a 3-0 lead, the Flyers gave up two third period goals to send the game to overtime. The tying goal coming in the upmost devastating fashion.
Garnet Hathaway had the game on his stick with a wide open empty net in-front of him. Instead of shooting, he took one too many stick handles before Nick Schmaltz caught him and poke checked the puck away.
Less than 60 seconds later, the Mammoth tied the game with 34.2 left in the game.
If that wasn’t enough damage caused by the one too many stick handles, Utah would go on to win in overtime. Putting a dagger in what could be the Flyers hopes of turning around their season.
Losses like these tend to linger into the following games, which is not great when the Flyers have the NHL best Colorado Avalanche up next.
Before the devastation of the loss, the top line was having their best game in some time. The trio combined for six points.
Christian Dvorak scored twice and had an assist. Trevor Zegras had two assists. Travis Konecny had one.
The power-play actually provided the needed offense they have been trying to get from the man advantage.
While the Flyers have been getting their chances on the power-play, the goals actually came tonight. Not just once, but twice.
It was the fifth time this season the Flyers have scored two power-play goals in a game.
Bobby Brink’s 12th goal of the season was the first power-play goal of the night. It set a new career high in goals for Brink.
Dvorak’s second goal of the game was the other.
Samuel Ersson was good at times before reverting back to his struggling ways. When the Flyers needed him the most, he was unable to make the big save like he did in Vegas on Monday.
The Flyers finish off their three game road trip Friday night in Colorado at 9:00pm.
