The Great 8 continued his quest towards Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal scoring record.
Alex Ovechin, who had 51 career goals against the Flyers entering the game, scored career goal 888 tonight.
His 35th goal of the season opened the scoring for the Capitals. It was his third goal against the Flyers this season.
Ovechkin’s opening goal looked like it was going to set an NHL record for game winning goals, but Ryan Poehling ended those hopes in the 3rd period. And, ended the Flyers second long goal-less drought this season.
Poehling’s 6th goal of the season 5:10 into the 3rd period was the Flyers first goal in nine periods. The second time this season that has happened.
The time between goals, 191:09 of game, is the second longest in team history.
The last Flyers goal before Poehling’s tonight was also scored by Ryan. Last Thursday in Philadelphia vs the Lightning.

Sean Couturier would make it 3-2 with 2:36 left in the game.
Originally called no goal on the ice due to inadvertent goalie interference, John Tortorella would challenge the play. His second challenge of the period.
The questionable part of the goal was if Charlie Lindgren had the puck frozen under his blocker. Which, after review, was not the case as the puck laid in the crease before Couturier pushed it in.
Resulting in a Flyers goal and Tortorella’s second challenge win of the game.
The Flyers first challenge came 10-minutes prior after the Capitals thought they made it 4-1. Challenging the lead up to the goal for a missed game stoppage.
“It was such a close play of the puck hitting Couts skate or not after the hand pass,” Tortorella said. “It was a great night for our video coaches.”
Tortorella went on to joke during the next question they should be paid more.
