The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their second straight game at the Wells Fargo Center. Losing to the New Jersey Devils 3-2.
Before the game, head coach John Tortorella did not hold back when voicing his opinion about the Flyers lack luster game on Thursday. Making it clear that he wishes he knew why the Flyers continue to have lack luster performances.
“I have no idea. I can’t answer the question. That’s what I’m upset about,” Tortorella said. “I don’t have an answer. It’s just sloppiness… lack of concentration… you can name anything you want.”
Tortorella added “all I noticed was we didn’t have the proper structure against one of the top teams in the league.”
With the New Jersey Devils coming off a loss on Thursday, the Flyers faced the same situation as Thursday – a good team coming off a loss.
Unlike Thursday, the Flyers responded to their head coaches criticism. Especially after giving up the first goal once again – the 19th time this season.
But, it was a different story in the 3rd period.
Two critical mistakes in the defensive zone costed the Flyers two goals. Both coming off poor communication and a lapse in structure.
Carter Hart and Nick Seeler combined for the first one. Hart and Seeler did not communicate with Hart in possession of the puck behind the net. Before either knew it, the puck was in the back of the net.
The other came off a skillful play by Jack Hughes – who caught Hart cheating the post – before sliding it by him.
“We played a great 60-minutes,” Carter Hart said postgame. “It really comes down to goaltending.”
Tony DeAngelo Minutes Restriction
During his pregame availability, John Tortorella mentioned they wanted to control Tony DeAngelo’s minutes a bit. Mentioning that Tony is a big part of the team, but they wanted to do a better job of controlling his ice time.
Entering tonight, DeAngelo led all Flyers in ice-time – averaging 24:45 per game.
Even though John Tortorella mentioned the possibility of adjusting as the game went on, DeAngelo’s ice time remained consistent.
DeAngelo played 5:57 (1:27 PP) in the 1st period – 8:04 (2:46 PP) in the 2nd period – 7:37 in the 3rd period.
Loose Pucks…
- Head coach John Tortorella was clearly frustrated after the game. Tortorella took some of his frustration out on the media, stating all four questions he answered were “dumb questions.”
- Travis Konecny scored on the power-play in the 2nd period. It was Konecny’s second goal in as many games since returning from his upper-body injury on Thursday.
