Salt Lake City: Getting away from home is sometimes a blessing in disguise when things aren’t going well.

“It maybe relaxes some guys,” Rick Tocchet said when asked that very question. “When you are at home, you hear a lot of noise and it affects certain players. And on the road, you don’t really hear it as much at home.”

For the Flyers, it is an opportunity to right the ship after losing six straight games. The last five coming in blowout fashion.

Facing their biggest challenge of the season in the first leg of their three game road trip, the Flyers ended their six game losing streak. Earning a hard fought 2-1 victory over the red hot Vegas Golden Knights.

Travis Konecny’s two goals, his first two goal game in over a year, provided enough offense for the Flyers to hold on. Samuel Ersson’s 23 save performance held the Golden Knights to just one goal.

The Flyers faced a similar outlook to their recent struggles in 2023.

After four straight lopsided home losses, they headed out on a four game road trip. The first game not going as planned, giving the then winless San Jose Sharks their first win of the season in their 13th game of the season.

But, like Monday in Vegas, the Flyers leaders stepped up then as well. Finishing off the road trip with three straight wins in route to a five game winning streak.

“I think it loosens people up,” Rick Tocchet said on about what Monday nights win in Vegas could do. “When things don’t go your way, and you’re not playing at your best, you kind of grip the stick. I’ve seen that. Then when you grip the stick, your legs get tight. Then that means you don’t skate as well.”

Its not hard to see what one big win could do for a team. Take the Buffalo Sabres or Columbus Blue Jackets recently for example.

Both the Sabres and Blue Jackets rattled off long win streaks after a big win to end long losing streaks.

For the Flyers, stringing together a couple wins in a row is beneficial on multiple fronts. The biggest though, with their plan for this season, is to get back in the playoff race.

During their six game losing streak, the Flyers went from second in the Metro Division to second last in the Eastern Conference. Falling out of a playoff spot for the first time since November.

If the Flyers can recapture their game and make a push for the playoffs, this week away from home was the perfect medicine to solve their recent woes.

“Sometimes it’s good to just hang out with the boys,” Christian Dvorak said what a long road trip could do to right some wrongs. “It is nice to get on the road sometimes and just try to get back to your game and play simple.”
